Ps Georg Warnecke writes an interesting piece on his reflections on what AI can & cannot teach, & what human beings can learn from that, as well as what we need to experience for ourselves as humanity.
As AI increasingly becomes the first place that people turn to for help or guidance, Warnecke suggests that the question has to go deeper & shift from “What will AI soon be able to do?” to “What requires someone to have something to lose?”
That question changes the terrain. Some things are learnt through explanation. Much is learnt through imitation. We learn to speak, walk, pray, comfort, remain silent, argue and stay because others show us how. We live with them. We watch them do it. We follow them, sometimes consciously, often without noticing. But some things are only learnt because they happen to us.
Not as information. Not as pattern. Not as model. But as experience that alters the way we walk through life.
He goes through a few clusters of human feelings & experiences:
- Failure, loss, suffering;
- Guilt/shame, waiting, body as limit;
- Love, forgiveness, faith/belief.
As AI grows, gets “better,” it is not about intelligence, but investment; & investment does not equal capability – to be vulnerable, to be answerable, to be mortal. We are to beware of the dangerous counterfeit in AI.
All this does not mean: AI bad, human good. The human being is not the source of truth … So mere humanism is not enough … Not: the human being saves us from AI. The human being also needs saving.
He concludes:
So what can human beings not learn from AI?
They cannot learn from it what arises only through suffered finitude, bound faithfulness, real guilt, shame, body, waiting, loss, love, forgiveness and faith.They can think about these things with AI. They can search for words with its help.
But they must not confuse that with the thing itself. Human beings cannot learn from AI what only arises where someone stands under the thing of which they speak.
For AI can sort truth. It cannot endure it.
This brings to mind one of the 7 “I AM” sayings/claims of Jesus,
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.”
