In case you were not aware, there has been lots of buzz in the past 2 weeks regarding BTS announcing their boycott of the 2027 Grammy awards, following the introduction of a new “Best Asian Pop Music Performance” category.
It has been interesting to track the phenomenon known as “Hallyu” or Korean Wave of popular culture, a S. Korean government-backed initiative since the late 1990s. Forerunners or pioneers include BOA, Wonder Girls, Psy’s Gangnam Style, & rising supergroups like BTS & Blackpink, & most recently Kpop Demon Hunters.
Dr Jenny Banh, professor of anthropology at Fresno State (USA), discusses this in detail about South Korea’s Soft Power through the cultural exports of K-pop, K-drama & K-beauty.
From the aftermath of World War II to the explosive global success of “Gangnam Style,” she analyzes how the Korean government strategically invested in music, K-drama, & K-beauty to rebuild the nation’s economy & expand its global influence.
It’s been interesting to read the reactions & track the arguments from different sides, perspectives. Within Christianity & the body of Christ, there has also been a similar discussion/debate about contextualization, or its earlier predecessor, inculturation. Dr Todd Johnson (Gordon-Conwell, author “World Christian Database“) talks about dismantling the “ethnic foods aisle” in Christianity. Others suggests that non-Western voices should be invited to the “table,” be it in the Church (global body of Christ), missions or theological circles/arenas.

A noteworthy recent development has been the birth & formation of groups/movements such as COALA (Christ over Asia, Latin America & Africa), coincidentally also started out of S. Korea in 2023. Some have noted how this is a response or reaction to recent developments, issues amongst global missions movements/groups such as Lausanne, CWME (WCC) & WEA General Assembly (& Mission Commission).
COALA = A network of regional & national Majority World mission movements, reflecting together, listening, & acting for God’s mission.
Suffice to say, this is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of reflection & discussion. I hope to address & engage with this more in the near future.
