Finding rest in the midst of anxiety (Matt. 6.25-34) | Tony Yeo
Introduction
Do not be anxious (x3)
Gk. worry, concern, restlessness, unrest
Not problem free, but anxiety free
1. Abiding in God’s promises to us
Promise of life
Net worth – livestock, land, lavish food, fine clothes
Superficiality, packaging, status, symbol, wealth vs abundant life
Promise of love
Are you not more of value?
Birds, flowers
Promise that God is in control
Control of life, circumstances, people, God
Anxiety – negative effects
Do not give in to fear, grow up in faith
Deut 1.30-31
Turn to God, track record
Comfort, courage, confidence
2. Anchoring in God’s purposes for us
Gentiles – do not know God
Trust Him, who knows all things
God as our heavenly Father
What we seek is God Himself, to deal with our anxiety
Not inward looking, upward looking (v.33)
Seek His righteousness
What we seek, is what we depend on (idolatry)
Substitute worship for worry
True rest, not in bedroom, but throneroom
Follow, serve in His kingdom, love/hope
God can’t be second, but first in our life, church, society (not prominent, but preeminent)
Distracted, divided
Miss God’s call, destiny
Application/Conclusion
Big God, small anxiety/problems
George MacDonald, leave future to Him, mind the present
God who is good, knows all things, life/love, in control
Depends whose hands they are in, place them in God’s hands
Augustine, hearts restless until we find rest in God
Response song: He will carry you
