In September 2008, Durham University launched CODEC as a research project at St John’s College focused on biblical literacy & Christian preaching. Since Oct 2014, it was designated as a Research Centre for Digital Theology, exploring the interfaces between theology, media & digital culture, focusing especially on religious communication, theology & the sacred texts.
Codec: /kəʊdɛk/ a device, either physical or virtual, hardware or software, for translating, re-coding, re-engineering the analogue and the digital. CODEC is not an acronym: it is a name.
CODEC’s overall research focuses on three areas:
- Theology for a Digital Age – including Biblical/Scriptural literacy; humanology; impact of digital transformation on society, culture & communication; theological issues related to transhumanism, digital divides, singularity research
- Preaching and Imagination in a Digital Age – homiletics; communication of ideas; narrative theory & imagination theory
- Discipleship in a Digital Age – ongoing Biblical Literacy projects; BigBible web project; issues of growth & discipleship within religious communities & their use of social media; being human; humanology

In Sep 2017, the first of its kind Master of Arts in Digital Theology (MADT) was started at Durham, & in 2021, it was moved to Spurgeon’s College (updated: last batch graduated July 2025). A new PhD in Digital Theology is being developed in partnership with Cliff College.
